Does God really exist?
God cannot be seen with our eyes.
So asking, “Is God really there?” is not a strange question.
We may ask it while looking at the sky or across the sea.
Or while wondering what our own life means.
Does God really exist?
How does the Bible answer that question?
The Bible says God has made himself known.
It does not describe God as remaining far away and giving us no way to know him.
Instead, it says God has made himself known so that we can know him.
It points especially to three places:
the created world,
God's word,
and his Son, Jesus Christ.
Let's begin with the world around us.
First, look at what has been made.
Morning comes. Light appears. The sea rises and falls.
Plants grow, and countless living things share this world.
We are part of it too.
The Bible says that what has been made can point to God's unseen power and divine nature.
The Psalms also describe the heavens and the sky as declaring the work of God's hands.
This world, Scripture says, tells us something about its Creator.
Then look at the human heart.
Sometimes we stop and ask questions.
“What am I living for?”
“Is this life all there is?”
Some questions cannot be answered by visible things alone.
Ecclesiastes says that God has placed a sense of “eternity” in the human heart.
Not only the world outside us, but something within us reaches toward what is beyond the moment.
The Bible pays attention to that longing too.
God has made himself known through his word.
The Bible begins with the words “In the beginning, God…”
It does not begin by offering a long proof that God exists.
It begins with God.
Then it keeps telling us what God is like, how he sees people, and how he has acted in the world.
That story continues throughout Scripture.
That is why Christianity opens the Bible when it seeks to know God.
And through his Son, Jesus Christ.
John's Gospel says that the “Word,” who was with God from the beginning, became human and lived among us.
Jesus walked among people, spoke with them, ate with them, and wept with those who grieved.
What is the unseen God like?
The Bible says God has also made himself known through his Son, Jesus Christ.
That is the claim Scripture makes.
Witnesses left their testimony about Jesus.
Jesus did more than speak about God.
He showed compassion, came near to people who suffered, and lived among ordinary people.
He was crucified.
Yet the Bible says he rose on the third day, and that the disciples testified to meeting the risen Jesus.
Paul also wrote that Jesus appeared to many people.
The testimony was not presented as a story known only in one hidden corner.
And the Bible speaks of faith.
Look at the created world.
Read God's word.
Learn about his Son, Jesus Christ.
Then Scripture speaks of approaching God in faith.
Faith that God is there—and that he responds to those who seek him.
